Description
This piece is a recreation of the iconic Christ Pantocrator, an exceptional work of early Christian art originally housed in the Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai, Egypt. Unlike the original, which was painted in encaustic on thin wood, this recreation is uniquely rendered on Egyptian papyrus, a material deeply rooted in the history of ancient Egyptian civilization. Papyrus, the cornerstone of ancient documentation and preservation, embodies a profound historical significance as a medium that has safeguarded cultural legacies for millennia. By combining this rich historical material with the timeless Byzantine art of encaustic painting, this piece creates a remarkable fusion of two distinct yet deeply interconnected worlds of heritage. As with the original, this recreation captures the dual nature of Christ: His right side (viewer’s left) reflects his humanity, while his left side (viewer’s right) signifies his divinity. Christ is depicted frontally, with His right hand raised in blessing and His left hand holding a jeweled Gospel book, all rendered in deep, subtle shades of purple and adorned with a gold cross-nimbus. This extraordinary combination of ancient Egyptian papyrus and the enduring Christian iconography of Christ Pantocrator celebrates the historical depth and cultural richness of two great civilizations.
